Title: Power Rice ball Author: Kae Umetsu (Japan)
Judges' Comment: This work was highly evaluated for its high degree of perfection in terms of color and composition, while using onigiri (rice balls), a traditional Japanese motif, as its subject.
The combination of the so-called "Japanese" color scheme, with the use of dark red and blue-green colors, is impressive and visually powerful, as is the use of strokes in the paint.
In particular, the contrast of colors used for the shrimp, nori (seaweed), and rice elements was effective, and the overall expression was highly evaluated for its appetite-inspiring effect. In addition, the design, which repeats the same composition no matter which part of the screen is cut out, creates visual rhythm and stability.
In addition, the work's strong intuitive sense of "looks delicious" and its simple yet highly appealing design also attracted support. The work is both practical and well-designed, evoking scenes in which it is used not only as a handkerchief, but also as a lunch box wrapper.
