The number three was considered auspicious in China, and the set of three plants, pine, bamboo, and plum, was called the "three friends of the cold of the year" and was respected.
The pine tree has the meaning of longevity because it does not wither in winter and retains its dignified appearance.
Bamboo is hard to break and grows quickly, signifying vitality and prosperity.
Plum blossoms are symbolic of nobility and longevity because they bloom in early spring before other flowers and have a noble fragrance.
