We’ve transformed time-honored proverbs into handkerchiefs featuring lighthearted designs that help you face each day with a positive outlook. These proverbs, cherished for generations, carry meanings that are a bit humorous, a bit stern, yet always ultimately uplifting. In our new “Proverbs” series, we’ve reimagined these sayings as positive messages that resonate with modern life.This series of handkerchiefs is designed to offer words of encouragement to someone or to bring a chuckle with their auspicious meanings.

The “HIKKOMI (HIKKOMI)” series was born from a designer’s offhand remark: “Does it have to be square?”Featuring a unique design with indented edges, this handkerchief is a creation only possible from a specialty handkerchief shop. It has been popular since its release, and to date, we’ve introduced designs featuring animal motifs such as cats and dogs, as well as themes from the worlds of stories like “Snow White” and “The Bremen Town Musicians.” Now, four new patterns inspired by “proverbs” are making their debut.
Trial and error with artisans to depict words through embroidery
The appeal of the HIKKOMI series lies in its ability to convey rich stories through small embroidered designs. The theme for this collection—“proverbs”—presented a new challenge: expressing the words themselves through design, rather than using visible motifs.We believed that by expressing the lessons embedded in these words through design, we could convey a variety of sentiments—such as encouragement and gratitude—layered within each piece. We carefully deciphered the meaning and imagery of each proverb, one by one, and brought them to life within these small embroidered pieces.
For example, for “I-totsu-mōshin” (charging headlong), we combined an embroidered wild boar with a tulle ribbon to create a three-dimensional effect that captures the momentum and dynamism conveyed by the four-character phrase. This depicts the image of a wild boar charging forward with great force.The final design was the result of repeated trial and error and numerous sample prototypes—deciding whether to use one or two circular tracks, determining the optimal width for the tape, and so on.
